Window and Door Trends: The Bigger, the Better!

You may have noticed the window and door styles that have come out in recent years have only continued to grow in size. Homeowners are making the desire for more natural light and expansive views a priority by installing bigger windows that have less frame and more glass area. In regard to exterior doors, 6’8” to 8-foot doors used to be the standard height. Now, 10-foot doors have become common, with 12-foot doors soon to follow. The following is more information about 2019 window and door trends.

Barn Doors

The popularity of barn doors – which hang on a track and can be rolled back and forth as needed – is growing. The nice thing about these doors is the size of the door isn’t dependent on the size of the door opening, and the hardware used to hang it adds an interesting design element to any space.

Expanded Glass

The love of big windows has been a growing trend over the last several years, and the demand for bigger windows with more even more glass just keeps increasing. Manufacturers are introducing windows that have thinner frames and more glass, and more and more homeowners are asking for floor-to-ceiling windows. Muntins and grilles are being left off windows in favor of an unobstructed view, while screens are also becoming less popular as homeowners in many parts of the country are choosing non-operational windows.

Modern Style

Millennials seem to be the driving force behind the growing preference for clean lines and simple styling in both window and door design. Although their homes may be smaller than those of previous generations, bigger windows and more glass makes it easier for today’s homeowners to maintain a connection to the outdoors. This modern aesthetic also leans toward square shapes and fewer details, which means molding around doors is decreasing in popularity.

Dramatic Black

Black window frames, both inside and out, are another design element that’s expected to continue to increase in popularity. If you love dark frames but find black a little too stark, you can soften the look by choosing dark neutrals like warm grays, brown, or bronze.
