Have Confidence in Your Hardware Choice

When renovating your kitchen or bathroom, there are so many decisions to make. Questions like what kind of flooring and lighting, as well as placement of cabinets, appliances, and countertops can fill your head. But don’t let the hardware become an afterthought, as sometimes it’s the little things that make the space.

Kitchen and bathroom hardware serves a functional purpose. Handles are used every day to open drawers and cabinets to pull out pots and pans, toiletry items, and even to throw something in the garbage. Therefore, your choice of hardware should complement your day-to-day living.

There are two main types of hardware: knobs and pulls. Knobs are smaller and usually round or cupped, while pulls are larger, typically easier to grip and come in many shapes and sizes.

After understanding the types of hardware, the next thing to consider is style. Homeowners typically choose one knob style they like and one pull style they prefer. Some people like to be cohesive and use one type of hardware – either all knobs or all pulls – on cabinets and drawers but mixing the use of knobs and pulls can create a visually appealing element. When choosing a combination of both, most people like to match the hardware to the cabinet or drawer. For example, a clean look includes using the same knob on every cabinet and using the same pull on every drawer.

The hardware should reflect what your kitchen and bathroom will look like after the remodel is done. In a traditional kitchen or bathroom, think about using hardware with ridges, curves, and other detailing. Materials like glass, ceramic, and crystal add to the traditional look. More modern kitchens and bathrooms are minimalistic, with stainless steel hardware that is sleek and creates clean lines.

The color of your hardware is also important. Examine what your cabinets, drawers, appliances, and countertops will look like, and what hardware would compliment them. Typically, cabinets and drawers in darker colors have warm hardware, while lighter spaces have dark knobs and pulls.

At the end of the day, the type, style, material, and color of your kitchen or bathroom hardware should match your personal preference along with function. It’s all about what will work best for you.
