What You Need to Know About Condensation on Windows

It can be a little disconcerting to find a layer of moisture not on the outside of your window glass, but between the panes. Not only will this window fog obstruct your view, it’s also an indication of a problem with your window’s operation and efficiency. Callen explains what you need to know about condensation on windows.

What Causes Foggy Windows?

Condensation on the exterior or interior surfaces of your windows is nothing to worry about; it’s caused by humidity and temperature differences. The same can’t be said for condensation found between your window’s glass panes, however. Energy-efficient double- and triple-pane windows are filled with inert gas that helps provide a layer of insulation. If the seal that keeps this gas contained ever leaks or breaks, moisture can then penetrate and build up between the panes of glass. Condensation between the panes, which can have the appearance of fog, is one of the first signs of a broken window seal.

How to Fix Foggy Windows

While you can certainly replace the glass if the seals fail, this is only a temporary fix. Eventually, you’ll need to replace the entire window in order to achieve the recommended energy efficiency. Window replacement is a big investment, and you definitely don’t want to be replacing a window with a broken seal again in a few short years because you chose the least expensive alternative.

The best way to prevent foggy windows is to avoid seal failure in the first place. This can be done by choosing replacement windows with energy-efficient glass packages, like Infinity from Marvin® windows. When choosing new windows for your home, it’s essential to research the failure rate of the windows you’re considering purchasing. This will help you determine if those particular windows are prone to seal failures.
