Using Our Homes Differently

Are you living in your home differently these days? COVID-19 has impacted all of our lives, and many of us are using our homes differently. Some of you have been asked to work from home, others have been furloughed, and unfortunately, some of you may have lost your job. We all hope eventually things will get back to normal, right? But will they?

Many recent articles have indicated several things about the workforce and economy. Some of us (like myself at WISN-AM) have not changed since March. I have worked six days a week from the iHeart complex, taking all the necessary precautions, and thankfully we have stayed healthy and productive.

Some people may never go back to the office. If you are getting the job done from your home office, your employer may just want you to continue working from home. I’ve had people tell me they are more efficient at home, saving time on the road, travel expenses, etc. So that leads to making a place in your home into an appropriate work environment.

If you didn’t have a home office, you possibly turned an “unused” dining room, den, or bedroom into a private office. If your situation is going to be more permanent, now is the time to consider adding some bells and whistles to make your space more comfortable and convenient. In addition to renovating your current space, how about remodeling your lower level not just as an office, but also a home gym, an entertainment area, and maybe a bar area to relax in after a hard day’s work.

The bottom line, it would be nice to not have to use your laptop on your kitchen island, with kids and pets distracting you during the day.
