How to Protect Your Home During Exterior Renovations

Professional home remodeling is an excellent investment. However, it’s important to prepare adequately before any renovation begins to ensure your property and your family are protected. Whether you’ve scheduled a siding or window replacement, keep the tips below to protect your home in mind as you prepare for the project to begin.

Important Guidelines to Follow

To ensure the integrity of your home and the safety of your family while exterior remodeling is going on, be sure to follow these tips:

  • Clear the work area.  In order to protect your home and belongings, you’ll need to clear things such as potted plants, grills, patio furniture, and lawn ornaments from the work area so they’re not damaged by falling debris. If you don’t have room to store them in a garage or storage building, move them at least 20 feet away from the job site.
  • Remove items from the roof. If you’re doing a roof replacement and have a cable dish, antenna, or solar panels on your roof, remove these before the project commences to speed up the process and prepare the roof for the roofing contractor.
  • Keep pets and children away from the work site. Children and pets are curious, which can be dangerous during an exterior renovation project. Don’t allow them to wander around while work is underway. Make sure they stay indoors as much as possible and are closely supervised anytime they go out.
  • Park further away from the house. The roofing company you hire is going to need easy access and plenty of room for parking. As such, it’s best to park your vehicle(s) somewhere else so they don’t get in the way and slow down the project. Try parking on the street if this is an option for you. Even if you have a garage, you likely won’t be able to use it since the crew will probably have equipment set up in the driveway.
