How to Brighten a Windowless Bathroom

Anyone that has a small, windowless bathroom in their home, like in the basement or interior of the home, knows this space can be dark and uninviting – but it doesn’t have to stay that way! There are several things you can do to brighten up a windowless bathroom in conjunction with bathroom remodeling. If you’re struggling to come up with ways to make a bathroom in your own home more appealing despite its lack of windows, consider one – or all – of the following tips.

  • Install appropriate lighting. It is a well-established fact that bathroom lighting can be terrible if you don’t choose wisely. If you want an intimate aesthetic, consider using candles and lamps to light the room. On the other hand, if counter space is at a premium or you just want lighting that is more functional, another option is to mount wall lights or sconces. • Bring in some life. Plants can do wonders for bringing life and interest to just about any room, and bathrooms are no exception. Consider adding friendly little air plants, which are low-maintenance and easy to move when necessary, or even a hardy shade-loving plant that requires little light. If you want to add color without having to worry about maintenance, you can always bring in fresh flowers.
  • Integrate a unique piece of furniture. Rather than sticking to a traditional vanity, try incorporating something a little different. Add some charm by repurposing an unusual piece of furniture to be used as your vanity, or incorporate a unique find into your space, such as an old stool or other interesting knick-knack from an antique or second-hand store.
  • Choose light colors for surfaces. To make a windowless bathroom feel bigger, you’ll want to paint the room’s surfaces all the same color – if not white, choose something similarly light. This includes the walls, the floor, and ceiling. Alternatively, installing a multitude of glossy tiles throughout the room can have the same effect.
