Decorative Glass Windows Offer Increased Privacy

“When discussing new window options for a home, often times the style of window, the materials used, and energy efficiency are the main topics of interest, however, window privacy can be an equally important factor to consider,” said Lance Dahl, CR, Senior Sales Representative – Exterior Products with Callen. “Window privacy is a vital element for feeling safe and comfortable in your own home as it prevents people from looking inside.” Homeowners can opt for decorative glass windows to address their privacy concerns without compromising on style or aesthetic appeal.

“Depending on the specific application used, decorative windows can help achieve ultimate home privacy, which explains their popularity at entrances and in bathrooms,” Lance said. Beyond privacy, they can be incorporated into a space purely for aesthetic reasons, such as a kitchen backsplash or on a front entry door. In other words, decorative glass windows are exceptionally versatile, meaning they serve different purposes within a home, are available in an array of forms, and are produced using a variety of methods.

“Instead of a smooth surface, these types of windows have a textured finish that generate a distorted view, which can be experienced from both sides of the window,” he said. For example, the texture of the glass makes it arduous, if not impossible to determine what is behind the window. However, the window’s ability to obstruct views is not a hindrance when it comes to filtering natural light throughout a home.

Homeowners can choose from a myriad of finishes, such as frosted glass, patterned glass, laser-etched glass, laminated glass, stained glass, and painted glass. “Frosted glass windows, which disperse light and exhibit a frosted look, are produced with the aid of chemicals, abrasives, engraving, or sandblasting,” Lance said. Sandblasting is a technique where particles are applied to a window via high-velocity air.

Patterned glass or laser-etched glass are known for their unique and often elaborate designs. “While patterned glass is imprinted with a texture or pattern when the glass is in a pliable state, laser-etched glass relies on laser technology to create intricate engravings with pinpoint accuracy,” he said.

Another option for decorative glass windows is laminated glass, a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. “It consists of an interlayer between its two or more layers of glass and comes in various hues, including, green, gray, bronze, or clear with tinted interlayers for maximum privacy,” Lance said.

For those who favor more color, homeowners can select stained glass or painted glass. Stained glass is comprised of different pieces of colored glass that are combined together, and painted glass starts off as an opaque glass surface that is often covered by a colored silicone coating.

“Decorative glass windows are an ideal way for homeowners to increase home privacy as well as aesthetic appeal and even increase the resale value of their home,” he said. “They give homeowners and their families confidence and peace of mind while simultaneously allowing them to express their personal taste. If you’re in the market for new windows, be sure to consider privacy when making your decision.”
