Explore 2020 Bathroom Trends

“New Year resolutions often involve remodeling,” said Heather Brannan, Sales Design Consultant with Callen, Inc. “Latest trends are introduced at the start of each year, making January, February, and March ideal months to begin a home renovation. Bathrooms, in particular, are a popular home improvement project as they reduce energy costs, increase a home’s value, and can even improve quality of life.” What are the 2020 bathroom trends?

Spilling over from 2019, the use of terrazzo in bathrooms remains a popular trend. Terrazzo, which is a composite material comprised of a combination of various substances such as marble, granite, quartz, and glass among other elements, is a reoccurring trend, thanks to its famous fragmented texture. “Typically, terrazzo is used in shower walls and bathroom floors,” said Heather. “In terms of material and color combinations, terrazzo is truly versatile, giving homeowners an endless number of possibilities to choose from. Moreover, it’s remarkably durable.”

For 2020, pumpkin red, champagne, and light yellow made the trendiest colors list, according to the Milan Design Show. “It’s important to note that because reds and yellows are exceptionally vibrant colors, it’s more aesthetically pleasing to use these colors sparingly,” Heather said. “It’s recommended to incorporate bathroom accessories that sport these vivid hues rather than use these shades to tile or paint entire walls.”

The shower is a major feature of a bathroom and they come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. “In 2020, open showers are all the rage,” she said. “More specifically, open showers that include bells and whistles, such as body sprays, handheld showerheads, bench seating, recessed niches, soft or diffuse lighting, fog-free shower mirrors, and linear drainage systems.” Additionally, many homeowners favor separating the shower and/or bath area with a wall of transparent glass, as it helps free up space, showcases artistic tile detailing, and makes the room appear larger. “If space allows, it’s recommended to opt for an open shower and a freestanding tub rather than a combined tub and shower unit,” Heather said.

It’s imperative to give bathroom lighting the attention it deserves as it not only serves to enhance the room’s appearance, but it also aids in the room’s functionality. Simple and liner lighting are popular 2020 bathroom trends. “If a complete bathroom remodel is in order, consider using LED strip lights to highlight bathroom vanities, walls, and mirrors,” she said.

Bringing the outdoors indoors is an up-and-coming bathroom trend. Beyond decorating the space with various plants, homeowners have also been opting to incorporate natural materials such as stone. This could include slate, marble, limestone, travertine, granite, and sandstone. Alternatively, bathrooms can be fitted with wallpaper that feature a form of green foliage. “Another key approach for getting in tune with nature entails embracing natural light,” Heather said. “For instance, creating a skylight or incorporating transom windows would allow light to generously flow through the space. If these are not viable options, a dimmer switch can replicate the effects of natural light.”

When it comes to tackling remodeling projects at the outset of the year, the bathroom is a fine place to start. “The variety of today’s bathroom trends help homeowners modernize the space without compromising on personal taste. From terrazzo floors to lighting inspired by nature, homeowners are sure to discover a contemporary bathroom trend that compliments their own unique style,” Heather said.
