Popular Window Styles

“When it’s time for new windows, homeowners have a multitude of options from which to choose,” said Christopher Wittmann, CR, Sales Manager and exterior product specialist with Callen. “For instance, double-hung and single-hung, casement, awning, and bay are just a few examples of some of the more popular window styles available.”

It can often be helpful to analyze some of the most popular window styles when beginning the process of selecting new windows for your home. Christopher and Callen explore the aforementioned window types and highlight the main characteristics of each.

Double-hung and single-hung windows are easily two of the most favored selections in terms of popular window styles. “The key difference between double-hung and single-hung is the type of sashes, or the moveable parts of the window, that are integrated into the frame,” Christopher said. Double-hung windows have two movable sashes so the window can open from the top and the bottom. A single-hung window also has two sashes, however, the top sash is stationary while the bottom sash is moveable. In other words, only the bottom part of the window can be opened.

One important advantage of these types of windows is improved ventilation, which is especially true for the double-hung variety. Both windows are versatile, meaning they can be incorporated into most spaces of a home without issue. Moreover, their unique design not only evokes a traditional feel, but it also plays a role in cleaning, particularly double-hung windows. Since both sashes can move and tilt in, you can conveniently clean both sides of a double-hung window from inside the house, thus eliminating the potential dangers associated with using a ladder outside.

A recognizable characteristic shared between casement and awning windows is their ability to open outwards. Typically, casement windows will swing open on side hinges, while awning windows are hinged at the top and are controlled with a crank. Due to how both types of windows open, it’s not suggested to place these windows near high traffic areas to avoid possible accidents.

“With regards to casement windows, they provide a considerable amount of sunlight and viewability since the framing does not interfere with the sizeable glass pane,” he said. They are also known for their ventilation properties. Compared to other styles of windows, they yield significant airflow. Plus, casement windows are highly energy efficient, as they make an exceptionally tight seal when closed.

Conventionally, awning windows are framed with substantial picture windows, which are stationary and don’t open. “If you find yourself in this scenario, you have the flexibility to choose to have picture windows installed above, below, or on either side of the awning window,” said Christopher. Alternatively, awning windows can be situated above a door.

“Bay windows are ideal for developing angles and adding prominence to a home,” he said. Thanks to the various angles involved, sunlight will filter into the home from several different points. Additionally, side windows that open are frequently paired with bay windows for ventilation purposes. You will generally see a bay window in the living room or kitchen as the broad sill can function as seating, or for those with green thumbs, a greenhouse of sorts.

From versatility to energy efficiency, the benefits of new windows are wide-ranging and significant. As you study popular window styles, keep in mind a key to selecting the right windows for your home is to carefully examine the physical space where the window will be installed, as well as the surrounding area and/or room. “Consider the functionality of the window, the space, the design, style, and even traffic flow on both sides of the glass,” Christopher said. “Remember to add your personal taste into the equation to help ensure your complete satisfaction with the final selection.”
