New Ways to Open Up a Home Without Knocking Down Walls

Open-concept homes are as popular as ever, but not every homeowner is keen on tearing down entire walls to achieve this look. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to open up enclosed spaces and update your floor plan without knocking down walls. Here are some ideas shared by Callen, your trusted local remodeling company.

  • Incorporate floating stairs. A traditional staircase with flanking walls and risers can be quite an impediment to your desire of a more open floor plan. A floating staircase is an effective solution that not only serves the practical purpose of connecting your upper and lower floors but can also serve as a stunning centerpiece for your space. In addition, these customizable stair systems are fairly quick to install.
  • Utilize barn and pocket doors. Another popular design method in homes is replacing interior doors with one or two barn doors. Barn doors are an attractive design element that are easy to slide out of the way when not in use, and work particularly well when paired with wider door openings. They will give you some of the openness you want without knocking down walls. If, on the other hand, you want your doors to blend in instead of standing out, pocket doors are an excellent option.
  • Create cozy corners. One downside to having an open floor plan is it eliminates many of the cozy little side rooms that are great for having private conversations or just enjoying a little time to yourself. Fortunately, there is a way to have it both ways. By incorporating a comfy chair or two, a lamp and a small side table into an out-of-the-way corner, you can create a semi-intimate space that’s not completely closed off to the rest of the room.
  • Look into semi-open floor plans. If you love the look and feel of an open floor plan but have no desire for your kitchen to be on full display day in and day out, consider a semi-open floor plan. For example, you could remove a portion of one wall and replace it with a pass-through window and counter, which will allow you to connect with those in the other room while still providing separation between the two spaces.
