Bathroom Remodeling

Key Takeaways from the 2020 Houzz Bathroom Trends Study

Every year, Houzz publishes a bathroom trends study to cover new and changing trends that homeowners are gravitating toward when making bathroom renovations. Despite the upheaval of 2020, bathroom remodeling is still going strong in most markets. Here are some of the most popular trends seen in the industry.

Creating a Bathroom Retreat

After the rough year we’ve all had, it’s no surprise that two in five homeowners made renovations in order to make their bathrooms a place of rest and relaxation. Whether it be a luxurious soak in the tub or a long, hot shower, American homeowners want to take full advantage of the peace, quiet, and relaxation they can find in a renovated bathroom.

Choosing the Right Style

If there’s one thing that motivates bathroom renovation, it’s the desire to get rid of old, outdated styles and fixtures. While many homeowners opt for a modern twist when choosing a bathroom style, transitional and contemporary styles run a close second. That being said, there are still traditionalists who, while enjoying fresh new designs and materials, prefer a more classic bathroom style. This year, traditional bathroom design gained three points from the previous year.

Making Waves With Accent Walls

Another popular feature to make the shower area more aesthetically pleasing is an accent wall. Most homeowners display their distinctive style with their choice of surface material, but a good percentage also did this using a specific color, pattern, or texture. Though white is still the leader when it comes to the color most often chosen for an accent wall in the shower area, blue and multi-colored walls were popular options as well.

Lighting Up the Bathroom

Dim bathroom lighting can really hinder getting ready for the day. This is one of the reasons four in five homeowners who invested in bathroom remodeling upgraded their master bathroom lighting. There are some who wanted to have the option of being able to dim the lights while enjoying a relaxing soak in the tub, while a small percentage incorporated mood lighting in the shower. Also, an increasing number of renovators are using LED lights to light up their bathroom mirrors.

Integrated Technology

As in most other areas of our lives, technology is an ever-changing presence. When it comes to the bathroom, technology can make routines a little more pleasant. For example, this year, nearly one in five of those who upgraded their toilet added a seat with a bidet. Other popular toilet technologies included a self-cleaning system, heated seats, and overflow protection.

How Shower Upgrades Affect Spending

In 2020, the median spending point for bathroom remodels was $4,500. Including a shower upgrade, however, increased the amount to $14,000.
