Bathroom Remodeling for Aging in Place

When planning for your next remodel, it’s important to keep in mind the length of time you plan on living in your home. During the initial consultation in our Design Center, our Sales Design Consultants will be sure to ask your future plans to determine the route your remodel should take.

Callen Sales Design Consultant Marie Owens recently met with a couple interested in remodeling their master bathroom suite. During the discussion, Marie learned they planned on staying in their home long-term. This information definitely helped determine the next steps in the remodel process.

The main reason these Wauwatosa homeowners wanted to remodel their existing master suite was to create an updated space that complemented their home style, while improving the floor plan, allowing it to be most accessible for years down the road. The existing bathroom was an addition to the original house and wasn’t constructed with ultimate functionality at the time.

The walk-in shower needed to shift to a different location to help construct an easy flowing floor plan, in addition to expanding its size. After reconfiguring the layout, the shower was moved entirely to a new space with a completely new look. When opening the shower door, the homeowners are no longer faced with a large ledge to step over to enter and exit. Also, a grab bar was placed on the shower wall for extra support. These two features are simple to incorporate into a remodel as a safety precaution.

When working through the remainder of the space, there were a couple other major focuses. When the original bathroom addition was done, there was a small step added, seemingly the plumber’s easy way of constructing it at the time. Now, the floor was easily designed to be the same level to create a better aesthetic and prevent mishaps.

Cabinetry was added next to the shower, within the vanity, and next to the toilet to maximize the amount of storage space. All the cabinetry was made for easy operation with the choice of hardware added to each drawer or door.

Now the entire space’s floor plan is designed for now and their future years, designed to be both functional and beautiful. The homeowners are enjoying their remodeled master bathroom suite and are glad they didn’t wait any longer to make the drastic change.
