Adding a Window or Patio Door Where There Isn’t One

When it comes to replacing windows and patio doors, most people think in terms of replacing what they currently have with something that’s the same size and shape, but perhaps in a style that’s more modern and energy-efficient. What they often do not realize is that they can make even bigger changes to open up their home and enjoy more natural light and ventilation, including adding a window or patio door!

From Standard Window to Picture Window or Patio Door

In most cases, a window opening can easily be enlarged to allow for the installation of a large picture window to expand your view, or even the installation of a sliding patio door. The costs associated with this will vary. If the wall where the door is installed is a load-bearing wall, for example, it will cost more to install the new unit. That’s because our installers will have to spend time and resources shoring up the door opening so it’s able to take on the weight that was once supported by the wall being opened up.

Don’t Skimp on Insulation

Once your new patio door is installed, if it’s not insulated properly, you’ll be looking at all sorts of problems. These can include cold drafts and condensation in the winter and mold in the summer when the air conditioner is running. If you want to avoid having to resort to emergency insulation measures such as rolled-up towels or blankets at the bottom of the door, don’t neglect to invest in plenty of weatherstripping as needed around the door frame.

Before installing the trim, we will use spray foam insulation to fill the gap between the framing and door jamb for additional protection from the elements. In addition, your installer will caulk the trim on both sides of the door.
