4 Considerations When Planning a Window Replacement Project

window replacement project can not only boost your home’s aesthetic appeal, it also helps address issues such as high energy consumption, poor daylighting and inadequate ventilation. Before having your old windows replaced, however, there are a few things you need to consider first. Today, we explain these considerations to guide you through this home improvement project.

1. Check your home’s foundation. Do this before you even plan to replace your windows. If the reason for window replacement is due to cracks around the openings, then it is likely an indication of an existing foundation issue. This is also likely the case if your windows are starting to stick or becoming hard to open or close. Make sure to address your home’s foundation first; otherwise, you’ll end up wasting your money on new replacement windows.

2. Review the energy performance of the windows. Whether your window replacement is a standalone project or a part of a kitchen or bathroom remodel, it helps to know more about the energy performance of your new windows. Make sure they come qualified by ENERGY STAR® and the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). These ratings indicate how energy-efficient the units are. Take note of the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), visible transmittance, U-factor and air leakage. Use the ratings to compare different windows.

3. Learn about window warranties. A comprehensive window warranty is imperative for your peace of mind. It adds an extra layer of protection to your window investment, ensuring you’re covered should problems arise with your new windows. With a warranty in place, it’s likely that you won’t shoulder the cost of the resulting repair or replacement work. Take note, however, that window warranties come with specific conditions. Read up on them so you know what is covered and what is not.

4. Consider your budget. To get an idea of how much you’ll spend on your window replacement project, be sure to obtain an estimate from a reliable window contractor. It should detail the total cost, from the materials and labor to disposal fees. Steer clear of cheap or too-good-to-be-true estimates — it’s likely that the windows themselves and the installation won’t be up to par. Always choose a window company that offers top-notch products and workmanship.
