Make Your Kitchen Work For You

Life can get messy between work schedules, family activities, and other commitments. When it’s time to grocery shop and cook meals, it’s easy to let your kitchen become a dumping ground of ingredients and overstock that get lost in the back of your cabinets.

“Your kitchen doesn’t have to become a black hole,” said Jen Cook, Marketing Coordinator with Callen. “Instead of letting your kitchen storage frighten you, make it work for you and your family by optimizing space with a kitchen remodel.”

Here are a few kitchen storage options and solutions to incorporate into your next kitchen revamp:

Customize Your Cabinets

For optimal storage and to free up space, consider pull-out cabinets, which slide out entirely, giving you easy access to everything you need. “Gone are the days where you have to dig through the cabinet to find what you want,” said Jen. “Pull-out cabinets are perfect for small items, like spices or small cans.”

Easy access to larger items is possible with pull-out drawers in deep cabinets. “You don’t necessarily need more space to manage your storage; sometimes you can rethink the space,” she said. “Pull-out drawers help you keep track of items so you’re not constantly throwing away expired goods.”

There’s even a way to make those awkward corner cabinets work to your benefit, as it’s possible to install a lazy Susan or pull-out shelves in these spaces, too.

Work with Shelves

Installing floating shelves in free space is another way to manage all your storage needs. Do you have a corner of your kitchen that doesn’t have appliances or furniture in it? Install shelves there. Do you have some blank wall space? Try tiered shelves.

If there are items that you don’t use frequently, like flour or special oils, plan to have a shelf above the cabinets or in the pantry to make them present. “This makes sure less used items are separated to prevent them from getting lost in the back of drawers or cabinets,” Jen said.

Have Fun with Design Features

“The benefit of remodeling is the ability to customize the look of your storage spaces,” said Jen. “For example, your pantry doors could be glass so you can see your organized space clearly, or they could have a frosted look if you’re worried about maintaining the pantry’s organization.”

Studies show a colorful background can help a space look cleaner. Plus, that color in the kitchen might inspire you to keep contents tidy. In addition, dividers and bins can help create a home for everything.

“With new design and features, everything from food prep to storage and cabinetry can be customized and improved to better your flow and lifestyle,” Jen said.
