Callen Highlights 2023 Bathroom Trends

Current 2023 bathroom trends lean toward additional space, enhanced color, and antique style. According to Callen, the homeowner’s personal expression is prioritizing uniqueness and character over conformity. “Bathrooms are small rooms usually entered alone, and thus Sales Design Consultant can capitalize on this sense of intimacy to make a more personal and welcoming impression,” said Danni Maddison, a designer with Callen.

For this reason, color is gaining traction over non-committal neutrals. Saturation is increasing with warm hues, leading to moderately dark and deep colors such as burnt sienna and teal. “These colors contrast well with neutral colors common to bathrooms, such as white countertops, toilets, bathtubs, or towels,” Danni said. “Pastel shades remain popular, especially in yellow, pink, or green, to contrast more lightly with neutrals.”

To break up these colors, patterned wallpaper has returned to popularity with water-resistant materials. Patterned wallpaper, along with drapery, adds texture, another way for homeowners to visually differentiate their bathroom and connect to their home’s overarching design theme. “Punchy accents are in,” said Danni. “Bathrooms might still be calm and serene, but homeowners want a visually interesting space with eye-catching elements that reflect their individual taste and personality.”

Texture is also commonly implemented in the form of natural wood, tile, and antique designs, with modernized waterproofing to keep them low maintenance. “These materials open an option to make the bathroom visually contiguous with the rest of the home, where wood and tile may be used more frequently. We’re seeing bathrooms that look less like bathrooms,” Danni said. “Wood and water don’t mix well, but waterproof wood replacements or coatings open up a whole world of nature-based aesthetics to make the bathroom more relaxing.”

For bathrooms that want to be distinct, a greater focus on personal expression is also seen in tile. Mosaics with custom colors and patterns are increasingly popular as a distinguishing touch, rather than larger, single-color marble or granite tiles. “Antique features, such as freestanding bathtubs and sinks, are yet another way to lend personality to a bathroom and fit naturally into the spacious designs many homeowners lean towards,” said Danni.

Spa-like bathroom layouts continue to be popular, owing to their luxurious appearance and providing a large canvas for the personal expression and customization. Freestanding bathtubs oriented in the center of a space evoke associations with royalty and leisure, whereas cushioned seating and bookshelves suggest lingering and relaxation. “Larger bathrooms allow enough space to be used for bathing or cosmetic application by multiple people at once or allow multiple people to have their own space within the same room,” Danni said. “Curbless showers fit better in bathrooms with more floor space as well and represent a safe option for homeowners with mobility issues.”
