What Are Double Hung Windows?

A double-hung window comprises two vertically sliding sashes within a single frame. These sashes operate independently, moving up and down on tracks. Their position is maintained by counterweights, springs, or friction mechanisms, and they lock securely at the center of the frame.

This classic window style often incorporates simulated divided lites, resembling traditional window grids. Some variations, known as “Cottage windows,” feature a narrower top sash compared to the bottom sash.

Unlike single-hung windows, double-hung windows offer versatile ventilation options, allowing for air flow from the top, bottom, or both. Their tilting sash design simplifies cleaning. Even when positioned beneath a projecting eave, the top sash of a double-hung window can often be lowered, providing ventilation during rainfall.
