“Oh there’s no place like home for the holidays.” I LOVE that song and I love the holidays – it’s the most wonderful time of the year, after all – gathering with family, traditions, music, and decorations. But, that song not only sums up the season, but how we should feel about the place we call home year round.
Is your home comfortable? Are you happy when you are gathered with family and friends? Nothing beats that feeling of closeness, but if your home is begging for a makeover or is not big enough to host parties over the holidays, you might be a candidate to remodel.
You may want to live in your house for years to come or you may have plans to move in the near future. No matter, your house will benefit in either case. Think about it – it’s a win-win for you and I speak from personal experience having worked with the outstanding crew from Callen for more than 20 years remodeling our homes.
If you are planning to stay in your home five or more years, you get to live in and enjoy your newly remodeled space for the rest of the time you reside in the home. It could be the kitchen, bathroom, or maybe a small mudroom makeover. Whatever the room, you get to enjoy its added benefits.
On the flip side, if you are looking to sell in a couple years, not only will you enjoy the renovated space during the rest of the time you’re in the home, you will add value, very likely increasing the resale price you will get for the home and moving your home to the front of the line for real estate agents and buyers.
Keep in mind that home buyers look at kitchens and baths first. If those rooms scream 1980, you may have trouble selling. I realize there is a cost to remodel, but when looking at cost vs. value reports, especially in this strong economy, you will see significant benefits. Plus, you get to enjoy the renovated space for as long as you reside in the home.
As we get ready for “The most wonderful time of the year,” take note during your parties and family time watching those classic holiday movies and think about the type of remodeling project that would benefit your house the most.
