In this post, we share a few bathroom lighting mistakes to avoid when remodeling your bathroom.
- Using only one type of lighting. In your bathroom, skip the single overhead light. Instead, focus on task lighting. This will make your morning grooming routine go more smoothly. In addition, adding dimmers that allow you to adjust the amount of light in your bathroom will help you create just the right ambiance when you’re ready to relax and unwind in your updated space.
- Hanging lights overhead. Nobody wants to look in the mirror and see an unflattering reflection staring back at them. This is what happens when harsh overhead lights point directly down on your head. To combat this issue, install a ceiling light that’s more toward the entrance so you’ll be lit from behind as you stand at the vanity. You should also avoid asymmetrical lights, which can create uneven illumination, as well as clear bulbs with filaments, which tend to cast shadows.
- Not installing LEDs. Not only will LED lights help you save energy, they last so long that you won’t have to change them for years to come. They’re also more minimalist than other lighting options, which helps contribute to a sleeker, more modern look, if that’s what you desire. Also, today’s LED lights have more wattage and the light is warmer and of a better quality, which means they pair well with incandescent bulbs.
- Only putting one light in the tub/shower area. Unless you have a very small shower, you’ll need more than one light fixture. Remember you shouldn’t install lighting directly over where you stand in the shower. Generally, it’s best to have equal lighting at either end of the tub or shower area. Don’t forget you’ll need to use wet-rated lighting for the shower and other areas that get direct moisture, and damp-rated lighting for those areas that get indirect moisture.
