Five Steps to Spruce Up Your Lawn for Spring

Long, brutally cold winters make green grass and warmer weather especially sweet for Wisconsinites! As temperatures head upward, it’s time to think about getting your lawn in shape for the upcoming summer. Follow these easy tips from Callen to spruce up your lawn.

Getting Your Lawn Ready for Summer

  • Clean and trim. Start by raking up dead leaves, twigs, and other debris that may have been buried under the winter snow. Not only will this help your grass to grow better, it will also help prevent damage to your lawn mower. In addition, inspect your trees for broken or damaged branches. You can prune them yourself or call in a professional to assist you. To keep things looking neat, use an edger along the sidewalk and around your flower beds.
  • Aerate. Aerating is best done in the spring. An aerator, which can be rented from your local home improvement store or lawn and garden center, pulls small plugs of soil and thatch out of the ground. This aids in helping roots to grow deeper. producing a thicker, healthier lawn.
  • Fertilize. Once you’re done cleaning and aerating, give your lawn an extra boost by applying a nutrient-rich fertilizer. It’s best that these nutrients be applied gradually, which is why slow- or controlled-release fertilizers are a great option. Keep in mind that not all grasses should be fertilized in the spring; some cold-weather grasses need to be fertilized later in the year. It’s also important to familiarize yourself with the role that properly timed watering plays in the application of fertilizer. Contact your local University of Wisconsin extension office to determine when your variety of grass should be fertilized.
  • Mulch. Mulch has many benefits. First, a layer of fresh mulch around trees and in landscaping beds keeps things looking clean and attractive. It also helps the soil retain moisture, prevents compaction, and enhances the soil. Just remember not to let mulch touch the trunks of trees or shrubs, and don’t layer it deeper than three inches.
