Callen Highlights 2023 Kitchen Trends

Kitchens in 2023 are expected to see greater variation in colors and styles, as opposed to standard white or neutral colors. Designs that strive to be clean-looking, modern, or minimalist are falling out of fashion in favor of those that suggest active use or give a sense of the owner’s personality. “Fewer people are going for the pure-white, futuristic style that was hot in the 2010s,” said Christi Pryor, Marketing Manager with Callen, Inc. She predicts that for 2023 kitchen trends, “Homeowners want it to look clean, but expressive.”

Adding more saturated color and assorted elements, such as mixing drawer and cabinet handle styles, will likely increase in popularity, suggesting a greater sense of personalization or uniqueness. “Appliances also will tend to remain uncovered, rather than hidden in cabinets or drawers, as they have also moved forward in design offering more stylish and colorful options,” Christi said. “Also, wooden countertop space for cutting may be used to break up designs and add another element of ‘lived-in’ appeal.”

Homeowners have widely expanded their kitchens in recent years, adopting larger kitchen islands to add counter space and make the kitchen into an enhanced gathering space “Kitchen islands allow more people to use the kitchen at once, which allows the family and/or guests to prepare food and socialize simultaneously,” she said.

Open-concept ground floors are becoming more prevalent, with kitchens placed adjacent to living rooms and other social areas such that they blend. “People can flow in and out of the food preparation area and remain within speaking distance of one another, while taking part in group activities, such as TV watching, while continuing their food prep,” said Christi.

Increased pantry space will continue to be more prevalent as well, including use of walk-in pantries, which may be closet-sized, room-sized, or a niche off an open-plan kitchen area. “The benefits of larger pantries include larger storage space, easier organization, and more convenient access to stored goods,” Christi said.
