Kitchen Remodeling in Winter

The coronavirus pandemic coupled with the imminent winter season means an increasing number of homeowners will be spending more time indoors. So, why not take advantage of this opportunity to give your kitchen the love it deserves? “Although some homeowners may be skeptical about scheduling kitchen remodeling in winter, in actuality, it’s a highly beneficial time to do so,” said Tom Lawler, a kitchen and bath Sales Design Consultant with Callen, Inc. in Muskego. When it comes to the kitchen, aka “the heart of the home,” it’s important to give this space appropriate attention. More than just a place to prepare meals, the kitchen now operates as the main area where work is done, homework completed, and families gather. The concept of kitchen remodeling in winter includes not only how the space will be used but the components that comprise the space. The kitchen’s work zones is one of the first things to consider. There are typically three distinct work centers within a kitchen – food storage and preparation, cooking, and cleanup. In conjunction with the development of the zones is a kitchen's work triangle – cooktop, sink, and refrigerator. “At the outset of the project, we talk with the homeowner on how they will use the zones and what they want to have incorporated into these areas, including the potential need to update kitchen appliances,” Tom said. “Based on what is determined from these discussions, we create a design that provides the functionality desired.”The overall look of the kitchen should also compliment an owners and home’s style. For example, the countertops selected for a renovated kitchen provide an opportunity to utilize warm and bright colors and finishes, helping to transform the look of a kitchen. “There are a variety of possibilities, such as polished granite, quartz, or marble for a high-end look; stainless steel for a contemporary, industrial vibe; or laminate as a budget-friendly option,” said Tom.When it comes to a kitchen’s cabinetry, there are many choices. “For instance, do you gravitate more towards simple clean lines that are found in shaker design? Or do you favor ample storage for cooking utensils that contemporary kitchen cabinets provide?” he said. “You can also consider a rustic or country style that exude a casual feel with various wood elements or is craftsman-style more to your liking? In addition, the hardware selected for doors and drawers provide endless options to present your style or display a decorative touch.”There are a number of flooring alternatives to match varied tastes and budgets, including hardwood, laminate, tile, and vinyl. “An important consideration is resilience,” said Tom. “Since kitchens are high-traffic rooms, there is a need to manage wear and tear along with the potential of spilled food and beverages.”An opportunity that encourages homeowners to get creative and allows the incorporation of a fun pop of color or a unique material or design is the kitchen backsplash. “This is one of the rare instances where you don’t have to overly concern yourself with ensuring the colors and materials perfectly match the rest of the space,” Tom said. “Instead, put your energy into showing off your backsplash as the kitchen’s focal point.”When completing a kitchen renovation, upgrading the sink and faucet is often an important part of the process. “It is necessary for the style, color, and materials you choose for your new sink and faucet to compliment the overall space,” he said.Lighting is also an integral part of a kitchen remodel. “New light fixtures that feature warm, earthy tones, and light that is bright and inviting can enhance the space,” said Tom. “Plus, when it comes to lighting fixtures, your options are endless in terms of shape, size, metals, and finishes.” A few trends expected to be popular in 2021 include geometric shapes, rustic style, chandeliers, colored glass, sculptural fixtures, horizontal light, and vintage style light fixtures.“While there is much that goes into a kitchen remodel, the benefits achieved with the renovated space will be cherished by those that use the room for eating, work, and family time,” Tom said.If you have questions about kitchen remodeling in winter, call Callen today.
