Does Your Home Need Storm Doors? Ask Callen

Before installing a storm door, it's important to understand its purpose. Knowing the basics of storm doors will help you make an informed decision about whether or not a storm door is right for your home. What Is a Storm Door?A storm door is an exterior door that’s installed in front of an entry door to protect it from the elements and provide additional ventilation during warmer weather. Some door models accomplish this by using interchangeable glass and screen panels. The glass panel can be removed and replaced with a screen panel as the weather warms in order to let in fresh air, then put back in place when cold temperatures return. Other models have retractable screens that can be rolled up or down as needed. Is a Storm Door Really Necessary? When deciding whether a storm door is right for your home, there are certain things you need to take into consideration. First, think about the local climate. If your exterior door is often exposed to the elements, a storm door is a good option for providing additional protection. However, if you already have a newer, energy-efficient, well-insulated door, a storm door may not be necessary. There are some instances in which having a storm door can be a detriment. For example, if your entry door receives more than two or three hours of direct sunlight a day, a storm door should be avoided, according to the Department of Energy. This is because the glass on a storm door can trap heat between the two doors, which could cause damage to the entry door. In addition, if your entry door has an overhang or a porch to protect it, a storm door isn’t really necessary.Storm Door Advantages & DisadvantagesAs with anything you invest in for your home, before purchasing a storm door, it’s important to first do your research to ensure it’s something your home needs. After all, while there are pros to having a storm door, it does have its cons as well.Advantages:

  • Shields the entry door from the elements
  • Increases visibility and lets in more light
  • Provides ventilation during nice weather
  • Helps keep out insects

Disadvantages

  • Not necessary if your door is already protected by a porch or deep overhang
  • The glass can trap heat, which could damage the entry door
  • Having an additional door to open can be inconvenient when carrying groceries or small children
