My August 2021 blog was about back to school planning for families and with kids now being back in school, family life has again changed. With space needed throughout the home for various undertakings, including accommodating leisure activities, such as exercise and crafts, along with school and remote work areas, determining how to arrange these areas has become more challenging.
With that in mind, I urge you to start the process of remodeling your home’s interior by getting a designer’s perspective on what is needed to develop space for the different aspects of home life. One of the first things a Callen designer will do during your initial meeting is to ask questions, including:
- How many people live in the house?
- Do you have kids and if so what stage are they at?
- Are there pets in the home?
- What are the traffic patterns?
After obtaining the answers to these types of questions, the Callen designer will ask about your “wants” and “needs,” which will help them determine how to prioritize what will be incorporated into the renovation. In my experience with doing remodeling of our home, I like to focus on my own family and why we want or need a project done. Keep in mind that this is about your family, not the next family to own the home.
After the designer obtains your responses, you should ask about the impact your remodeling project will have on your home’s value. It is obvious that a well designed and constructed project will add value to your home, but the return on investment will vary based on the renovation completed.
With realtors in my family, I know you should not remodel based on what a realtor thinks would add immediate value and help sell the home. Remodel for yourself, as the work you want to have done will make it better for you and those that reside in the home to get the most out of the space.
One last reminder – be patient! The wait is a part of our life now; so build that into your overall timetable of doing a renovation. Call Callen to start the process of remodeling your home to make it all you want it to be.
