master bathroom styles houzz 2020's most popular bathroom style trends

continues to be at the top of the list for homeowners looking to renovate their homes, primarily due to a desire to get rid of an old, outdated bathroom space. According to the 2020 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, three trends in particular vied closely for the top spot. Here we rank the top master bathroom styles for 2020 and highlight some characteristics of each.

The Top Three Master Bathroom Styles of 2020

Not surprisingly, 89% of homeowners go into a bathroom remodel with a desire to change its style. Many also want a relaxing at-home getaway where they can go to let the stress of the day melt away. Each homeowner has their own idea of what the perfect bathroom looks like, but there are three design styles in particular that homeowners preferred in 2020, according to the study:

Modern

Of those that wanted a fresh, new look, 20% chose a modern design style. This can mean different things to different people but, in general, when people speak about modern design, they’re referring to the following concepts: clean, straight lines, simple geometric shapes, natural materials, basic or neutral colors, and very few (or a total lack of) decorative accents.

Transitional

Though transitional style surged in 2019 and enjoyed a brief stint at the top, it dropped to 18% last year, making it the number two renovation style, along with contemporary. Transitional bathrooms typically feature traditional fixtures such as pedestal sinks and clawfoot tubs, along with more modern or contemporary furniture pieces such as angular cabinets or other storage pieces. This can also go the other way, with more traditional cabinetry being combined with a round modern tub, for example.

Contemporary

Contemporary gained slightly from 2019, moving up from 16% to tie with Transitional, as previously mentioned. With its clean lines and geometric patterns, contemporary bathroom design is similar to Modern design in some respects. However, while Contemporary bathrooms are ever-changing with whatever materials, décor, and designs are currently trending, the Modern design style emerged in the 1920s and 30s.
