The Scoop on Transitional Kitchen Design

In recent years, transitional kitchens have become the go-to design style, but many homeowners are unsure what this kitchen remodeling style really encompasses. Let’s take a look.

What Is a Transitional Kitchen?

Transitional kitchen design stands midway between traditional style and contemporary design. It “transitions” between the styles by blending traditional elements such as wood with more contemporary touches in fixtures and manufactured materials to produce something fresh and new. For this reason, a transitional kitchen can be highly customized and lean more traditional or modern, depending on a homeowner’s preferences. If the rest of your home is more traditional, a transitional kitchen is a great way to add freshness and updated style without looking out of place.

Characteristics of Transitional Design

  • Streamlined cabinetry. Transitional cabinetry tends to keep a low profile. You won’t find much ornate carving, corbels, or crown molding, although wood is typically used as opposed to glass or lacquer. It’s important to keep the lines clean in a transitional kitchen.
  • A mix of materials. A transitional kitchen will generally feature a unique blend of natural and manufactured materials in one space. You might find wood cabinets, concrete countertops, marble flooring, and stainless steel all working together.
  • A neutral palette. Transitional kitchens generally feature a neutral palette to achieve a sophisticated, classic look. This doesn’t mean the kitchen has to be all-white, but neutral tones such as white, beige, light gray, and even blues are a key feature. However, pops of color are welcome, particularly on the kitchen island or backsplash.
  • Great texture. While transitional kitchens may be subdued when it comes to color, they’re far from boring. Visual interest can be achieved by using everything from mixed metals to unique tile surfaces to rough or polished stone.
