For many families, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It is no longer merely the place where meals are prepared; it is instead the space where families cook and eat together, enjoying one another’s company. “Because the kitchen is one of the most popular rooms in the home, homeowners put much thought into their kitchen remodel,” said Jennifer Earhart, Sales • Design Consultant for Callen. “Including favorite kitchen features that reflect their lifestyle and create a beautiful atmosphere are important.”

While the must-have features of a new kitchen vary from home to home, the following are a few common amenities that may help a kitchen run more smoothly and efficiently.

Kitchen Island

“Today, no kitchen is complete without an island, preferably one with a stovetop or workstation sink,” Jennifer said. “A generously sized island becomes a hub for meal preparation, family meals, and socialization when entertaining guests.”

Many modern kitchens have stovetops built into the island to save an entire wall for a double oven versus a stove-oven combo. Perfect for households who entertain often or are serving large families, double ovens allow homeowners to cook multiple dishes at varying temperatures or, when not in use, use them as a warming drawer to keep food hot.

Also common are multifunctional sinks with cutting boards and drying racks installed to make prep and clean up easy. Another appreciated amenity is counter outlets that hide cords and make using small appliances a seamless experience.

Smart Storage Solutions

Kitchens come with many tools, and using space smartly for storage is a necessity.

“A walk-in pantry is a common kitchen addition,” said Jennifer. “Equipped with a pantry, homeowners have ample storage for dishware, ingredients, and small appliances in a visually appealing and organized space.”

Pullout drawers are also popular to make items accessible for those of all ages. Appliance garages also help hide items like the coffee pot, mixers, toasters, and even microwaves.

Latest Technology

Whether a kitchen includes an oven or lighting that can be controlled by phone, the energy usage that smart technology can offer is invaluable. Not only will smart devices optimize lighting and appliance usage, but they will also allow homeowners to adjust settings based on their activities.

“Technology offers the space more functionality,” Jennifer said. “If you’re staying in for a cozy evening, the lights can be dimmed at the touch of a button. Whether you’re having a whole crowd over or just feeding your family for the night, the progress of your food in the oven can be monitored.”

Layered Lighting

Adding different types of lighting in the kitchen adds to the beauty of the space.

“In addition to natural light and ceiling fixtures, toe kick lighting, under cabinet lighting, interior cabinet lighting, and pantry lighting will ensure all areas of the kitchen glow,” said Jennifer.
