OK, you read my headline and think I’m nuts, right? Fall, your favorite season? Yeah, that’s right. Oh, I’ve heard the reasons why I shouldn’t like fall, the biggest one being that winter is next!
While winter is right around the corner, fall has always been my favorite, and here’s why. Fall has the distinct change from warm to cooler temperatures, though the late summer and early fall warm temperatures we’ve experienced this year have been outstanding. Shorter days, cooler nights, falling leaves, and yes, fall clean up. It’s why I like the change of seasons – it almost forces us to redecorate, clean, and make changes to our home.
This leads us to remodeling our homes. Have you had outdoor get-togethers this summer that soon will need to move indoors? As I watched my beloved Packers beat the Bears once again (sorry, Bears fans, but Rodgers DOES own you!), I enjoyed the outdoors with a big screen TV, multiple speakers, and friends. Realizing it might have been the last warm weekend of the year, I enjoyed every minute of being outside.
But the reality is we spend close to six months using only the inside of our home. With that in mind, did you select your home’s fixtures, flooring, countertops, and cabinets, or were they chosen by your home’s previous owner? In short, is your home the way you want it to be?
My wife and I are slowly moving into the “empty nester” mode, leading us to thinking of ways to use the empty bedrooms in our home. The ideas are endless and we talk nearly every day about what can be done. This leads us to consider needs versus wants for the overall look and feel of our home. It’s exciting, as it may be a need, like a laundry room, or a want, such as new granite countertops and backsplash to update the kitchen. It could be renovating the lower level or improving the home’s energy efficiency with new windows and doors.
My point is that remodeling serves many purposes – increases home value, aesthetically enhances the property, and probably most importantly, it makes you happy because you wanted the renovation done. There is a trickle effect, as the value of your home goes up, your home has more appeal, and it likely sells faster when the time comes to move.
