Over the past few years, cooler tones have been common in kitchen color schemes. However, the turmoil of 2020 encouraged people to lean towards warm, soothing shades that elicit a sense of comfort and familiarity. In fact, the PPG 2021 paint color palette of the year consists of Transcend, which according to the PPG website, describes a “midtone oatmeal-colored hue that draws on earthy influences and nostalgia.” Tom said, “To fully embrace a warm color scheme in the kitchen, it’s best to combine warm hues with wood and gold elements, pieces of woven fabric, and green foliage.”
Hand hygiene is critical, especially in the kitchen where food is prepared. Moreover, the pandemic has placed a heightened emphasis on washing hands, which is why there is an increased demand for touchless faucets. Beyond motion sense taps, there are also voice activated faucets. “Not only do voice activated faucets eliminate a high-touch surface where germs would otherwise spread easily, they also substantially increase efficiency in the space,” he said. “These types of faucets allow you to vocalize precise amounts of water you’d like dispensed, making cooking easier. If you prefer minimal maintenance, brushed or matte finishes are recommended.”
Seamless lines, which are commonly associated with contemporary kitchen styles, will continue to be a popular design element in 2021 kitchen trends. However, a stronger emphasis will be placed on natural materials that exude warmth and exhibit an array of textures as well as eco-friendly features. “This includes flooring that mimics the appearance of natural wood, such as tile and vinyl, as well as energy saving appliances and fixtures,” said Tom. “Consider pairing state of the art elements, such as lighting fixtures and faucets, with more earthy color schemes as modern kitchen elements can be flawlessly integrated into any kitchen style.”
Beyond preparing food and housing cookware, kitchens have evolved into a space where families dine, entertain, and even work. In fact, with an increasing number of people working from home, areas of the kitchen have been transformed into work spaces. With that mind, larger islands, those that are 24 square feet or more, are highly beneficial. “This extra space, which typically includes ample seating, increased storage, and additional electrical outlets, helps accommodate families who utilize the island for various purposes,” he said.
Along with grander islands, bigger kitchen windows are also trending. “Families who have spent increased time in their homes are looking for enhanced outdoor views and fresh air. Large windows, such as bay, awning, sliding, double hung, and casement, are ideal for both expansive views and proper ventilation,” Tom said. “They’re also great for filling the space with natural light. Not to mention, a window ledge is a prime location for an herb garden or various indoor plants.”
Previously, range hoods were often viewed as a kitchen element that needed to be concealed. “Recently, we’ve moved in a direction where the range hood is becoming more of a statement piece, similar to a kitchen backsplash,” he said. This doesn’t mean the range hood must be embellished in order for it to be the center of attention. “Rather, something as simple as painting the range hood in an accent color or incorporating wood tones can work wonders,” said Tom. “In addition to color, another aspect of this trend involves the materials used for the range hood itself. Expect veneer porcelain and marble to become fashionable choices.”
In uncertain times, people tend to be drawn towards warm, comforting design elements. “People will take solace in spending quality family time in a kitchen space that emits warmth and comfort,” Tom said.
