Your windows serve many purposes. Not only do they let you enjoy the outdoors from the safety of your home, but they also help regulate the inside temperature and protect your house from undesirable natural elements.
“Windows are an investment, and regular maintenance is necessary to maintain their quality and durability,” said Lance Dahl, CR, Calen Sales • Design Consultant.
Callen uses carefully curated windows and patio doors from Infinity® from Marvin® in homes — which have several benefits including easy operation and minor maintenance costs. Homeowners can help keep these windows and patio doors functioning properly by following these steps.
Deep Clean Your Windows
Dirt and debris can damage the window glass, and dirty windows can diminish your home’s curb appeal. This time of the year offers the perfect opportunity to spend the day making them spotless.
“Quality cleaning solutions for your windows are either a store-bought option or a mixture of 10 percent vinegar and 90 percent distilled water,” Lance said. After spraying the windows down, wipe away the cleaner with a squeegee or microfiber cloth. Avoid paper towels, as they can leave streaks and other residue behind. Use this strategy for both the indoor and outdoor windowpanes.
Inspect the Windows Annually
Take an hour once a year to examine your windows. Overlooking issues with your windows now can save you from bigger problems in the future.
“The most important item to look for is moisture or leaks,” said Lance. “These are usually found around cracked sealants, like caulk or weather stripping. Carefully scan the window’s bottom corners and in between panes of glass. If you notice a draft, it may be time to replace your sealant. This will save you costly energy bills in the future.”
If you’re struggling to open and close your windows, it may be because the tracks are filled with dirt and debris. Clear the window’s tracks with a dry brush and vacuum, followed by soap and warm water. If the hinges and tracks continue to stick, use a silicone-based lubricant — not WD-40 — and spray it onto a microfiber cloth to wipe the tracks.
Finally, if you see any major issues, like broken panes, it’s time to call Callen. “With our practical solutions and commitment to creating functional living spaces, Callen will provide replacement windows that deliver lasting value and satisfaction,” Lance said.
